Trondheim Grand Tour: A Living Open-Air Museum
Welcome to Trondheim — Norway’s medieval capital, where the past and present intertwine to form a unique tapestry of cozy streets, riverside quays, bridges, and fortresses.
Your adventure begins with a meeting with your guide at your hotel or a designated spot in the city center. You'll embark on a fascinating journey through the ancient streets of Trondheim, rich with tales of Vikings and kings, living legends, and mysteries of the old town. Follow in the footsteps of the city’s founder, King Olaf Tryggvason, and see his bronze statue rise above the square like a giant sundial.
The centerpiece of the tour is the Nidaros Cathedral — one of Northern Europe’s most striking Gothic churches and the traditional coronation site of Norwegian monarchs. Its soaring arches, intricate sculptures, and the iconic rose window will leave a lasting impression. If you wish, you may enter the cathedral and visit its archaeological chambers (optional visit).
You will also see the Archbishop’s Palace, the oldest secular building in Scandinavia, which houses Norway’s royal regalia. Nearby stands Stiftsgården, one of Europe’s largest wooden palaces and the Norwegian king’s current summer residence. An interior visit can be arranged (optional).
As you stroll through the atmospheric old town of Bakklandet, you’ll cross the historic Gamle Bybro with the “Gate of Happiness” — with stunning views of colorful wooden houses on stilts and charming footbridges over the Nidelva River. No wonder Trondheim is known as the "Venice of Norway". This is the perfect spot for a photo and a quick coffee break at a nearby café.
Next, follow your guide up to Kristiansten Fortress, a 17th-century stronghold perched on a hill with a magnificent panoramic view of the city and fjord. Learn about Trondheim’s military past, including its role during World War II as a base for German submarines. You’ll even get a glimpse of the unique submarine bunkers still standing today. The tour also highlights Trondheim’s modern side — as Norway’s leading university town and a dynamic hub of innovation.
The tour concludes at the Sverresborg Open-Air Museum — a vibrant corner of Norwegian history. Surrounded by authentic wooden houses and traditional farm buildings, you’ll be transported into everyday life from centuries past. Explore a vintage photo studio, cobbler’s workshop, post office, old-style bank, and grocery store where you can buy a nostalgic treat. The ruins of Sverresborg Fortress still guard the secrets of King Sverre — discover his gripping story and enjoy one last scenic view over Trondheim and the Trondheim Fjord.
